At a young age Karina saw how empowering it was to get involved and give back to the community. That is why Karina prides herself in donating money and time to causes that she believes in. That has inspired her to do her part in helping make the world a better place. Here are some of the organizations that she is most passionate about.
St. Jude's Children Hospital
St. Jude is unlike any other pediatric treatment and research facility. Discoveries made here have completely changed how the world treats children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases. With research and patient care under one roof, St. Jude is where some of today's most gifted researchers are able to do science more quickly.
St. Jude researchers are published and cited more often in high impact publications than any other private pediatric oncology research institution in America. St. Jude is a place where many doctors send some of their sickest patients and toughest cases. A place where cutting-edge research and revolutionary discoveries happen every day. We've built America's second-largest health-care charity so the science never stops. To learn how you too can help children in need, visit www.stjude.org.
Alzheimer's Association

The Alzheimer’s Association is the leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer care, support and research. The Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders Association was incorporated on April 10, 1980, with a budget of $75,000 and businessman Jerome Stone as founding president. The seven founding chapters were Boston, Columbus, Minneapolis, New York City, Pittsburgh, San Francisco and Seattle.
In 1980, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) invested only $13 million in Alzheimer research. Then, in 1982, President Ronald Reagan designated the first National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Week. The Association founded more chapters and started its own research program. Things were beginning to happen. The Alzheimer’s Association, today a multimillion-dollar organization, has been the catalyst and leader for a generation of advancements in Alzheimer research and care. Our organization’s achievements and progress in the field have given thousands of people a better quality of life and brought hope for millions more. Green Plan Philadelphia
The City of Philadelphia has brought together city agencies and partner organizations to prepare GreenPlan Philadelphia, a comprehensive open space plan for the city.GreenPlan Philadelphia began in the spring of 2006 with the formation of six working groups, made up of city employees from thirteen agencies. This broad-based planning process is designed to institutionalize GreenPlan's recommendations into the city's operational departments involved in open space issues.
GreenPlan Philadelphia hosted a vibrant community engagement process in the fall of 2006, consisting of community meetings, this website, and a number of other information-gathering activities. Draft recommendations will be based on a combination of the community input as well as research into best practices, data about access to open space, demographics and a variety of other important considerations. The draft recommendations will be available for comment on this website and at additional public meetings.
Toward the end of 2007, the final version of GreenPlan Philadelphia will be published. GreenPlan Philadelphia is a large, ambitious and dynamic project that will help sustain, create and improve open spaces throughout Philadelphia for many years to come.
